I've spent hours looking at fonts for my upcoming ampersand tattoo and think I've narrowed it down to the final few and would love your opinions! As far as placement I'm planning on getting it on the inside of my left arm just below the elbow.

Hey guys, I've been trying to decide on an Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close tattoo forever. There are just too many beautiful parts to pick one. My latest ideas I'm leaning toward are "raisons d'etre" under my bra wire or a tambourine...possibly on my bicep but more likely on my back. The only thing is I'm not sure how a tambourine will translate into tattoo form. I'm having a hard time finding a good picture of one to even bring to my tattoo artist to suggest what I want, a lot of them just seem sort of boring or worse - you won't be able to tell what it is. But maybe I'm just being paranoid. Just wondering if you guys have any opinion/suggestions about this?

Hi, first post here! I wanted to share the Harry Potter tattoo I got on my foot a couple months ago (definitely the most painful out of all my tattoos!). The series is definitely what pushed me into become an avid reader when I was around 9 years old, so I will always love it!

Other than that, my tattoos are pretty much all art-related. I really would like to get John Donne's sonnet "Death Be Not Proud" somewhere, but it would be quite large and I'm not sure where to put it or what kind of font/style to get it in. Any suggestions? |

I think I know which font I prefer, but I'm just looking for second opinions.
The words I want are from the sentence "On, then, on to R." This is from the passage of the book where the alphabet is used as a means to measure the progress of Mr. Ramsay's mind.
As for placement, not entirely sure yet. I've wanted a tattoo on my forearm for a while, but also thinking of under my collarbone (closer to the shoulder rather than center of chest area).
Any thoughts/concerns/etc. are welcome! |

Hello all! I want to start by saying that I am an artist and writer/English major/general lover of words, so I *love* this comm, and am so excited to soon be an active member!!
I have my first tattoo planned out--I want to get the word "fireworks" (sans quotes) on the inside of my left wrist. Its the title of my favorite poem, a memorial piece by Gwendolyn MacEwen. I've loved this poem for as long as I've been reading poetry, and it inspired one of the first decent poems I ever wrote. That poem was in memory of my late grandfather, so the title brings all of my nice memories of him to mind, too. There are about a hundred other reasons I want to get this word, but that's the short of it, at least.
Anyway, I'm posting for two reasons.
1) I was wondering if anyone had any advice about wrist tattoos-- does a particular type of font work better? I'm thinking something where the letters are spaces since its supposed to spread lots on the wrist... Any other general words of wisdom?
2) Does anyone have a favorite shop in Philly? I'm willing to travel--home is in Philly but the family is in South Jersey, so anywhere between the two works. I just want someplace good :)

Are there any "Unbearable Lightness of Being" tattoos out there? Or any Milan Kundera at all? I think his style is so beautiful and thought provoking, I can't be the first person to have had this idea.
I had surgery a year or two ago and I'm considering getting Beauty is a world betrayed across my ribs, running underneath the scar line. Or, possibly, What is gone is gone, from The Last Unicorn. Though that may be a little too literal.

Hello,
So, I have been lurking on this community for a while. I also just made a new live journal account because my other one was about 5 years old and I was like wow, I really posted that stuff? Anyway, I have been wanting a literature tattoo for a while and I have some ideas.
I originally wanted to get a tattoo from the book The Talisman by Stephen King and Peter Straub. I want to get the quote "When the moon takes me with her" with the image of a moon with a skull face and long hair. I went to the tattoo shop, and the guy I talked to said the moon would have to be really big do to all the detail involved in order to have it look good. He also said the best spot for it would be my back. I actually don't really want a tattoo on my back, because I want to be able to see it.
Do to this, I have since changed my mind. I have thought of a different location for the tattoo, such as the side of my thigh, but it all seems too complex for my first tattoo. I want to get a smaller one first, just so I know what I am getting myself into.
I know have been interested in the idea of getting an Anne Rice quote tattoo. The font would be in simplistic typewriting font, such as Times New Roman, Courier, or Old Book man Style.
Quote ideas:
1. I know nothing of God or the Devil. I have never seen a vision nor learned a secret that would damn or save my soul.
2. Goodnight sweet prince, may flights of devils wing you to your rest.
3. In the very depths of Hell, do not demons love one another?
4. You are the night and the night alone understands you and enfolds you in its arms.

Are these all too morbid? Everytime I ask someone close to me what they think of the quotes, they tell me I am too morbid. I think I like 1, 4 the best, although I also like 5 and 3.
I need help with placement. My original idea was to get in on my inner forearm, but I am going to school to be a social worker and am unsure of how a tattoo would go over in a work setting. I was also thinking the top of my shoulder (like Rhianna's tattoo) or on top of my thigh.
Anyone have any thoughts? |

Hello all,
So I posted forever ago about my huge idea ... I'm still planning that one out. In the mean time though I want to get another tattoo (my 3rd). My mom and I want to get matching ones together, because we've been through a lot together. The line is from a book called "Notes on the Refigerator Door" and it goes:
"When the road bends
We'll be on it together
Taking the curve
Clinging
To each other, like mother
To daughter,
To mother."
And on mine "to daughter" will be her handwriting (on hers it will be "to mother") The rest I think will be in some kind of script. Here's my problem or problems 1) I think the whole quote might be too long 2) I want it to be somewhere that I can see all the time to remind me of her, but I'm currently in law school, and I know I'll soon be trying to find a professional job so I don't know if getting it somewhere like my arm would be a bad idea, I was thinking inner forearm. I know I could just wear long-sleaves all the time but I don't know if that's really practical. Plus I already have a visible tattoo on the top of my right foot, so that'll be already be visible in dress shoes ... which I feel like it's subtle enough that I can get away with it, but I'm not sure about this other one.
Any thoughts?
Any young professionals out there with visible tats?

I just found this through a friend and thought that this was awesome. I love literay tattoos and have always wanted one. I've always wanted a tatto with a Shakespeare quote. I already picked one out from one of his sonnets. I've always loved Shakespeare so I figured it fit and I loved the quote. It's love is too young to know what conscience is, yet who knows not conscience is born of love? I think that quote is just so true and amazing. I'm only worried about one thing and that is the pain. I've never gotten a tattoo or anything else like that. I don't have a high pain tolerance so I'm really worried. I've had needles in my skin before - for blood tests - but never anything like a tattoo. And I'm also not sure where to put it. I was thinking like around my wrist but my veins are really close to my skin and I've heard that hurts a lot. So yeah. |

hi everyone. i really enjoy browsing the posts in this community. i've been playing with the idea of a literary tattoo for a long time. at the end of this week, i will officially have a BA in english lit and i just sent out applications to a few MFA programs in creative writing. needless to say, reading and writing are a big part of my life.
one of my favorite (if not my favorite) books is "other voices, other rooms" by truman capote. i doubt very many people have heard of it, capote is unfortunately mainly known for "in cold blood." i chose to do my senior thesis on "other voices, other rooms" and it holds a lot of personal significance to me as well.
i was thinking of having the words "other voices, other rooms" tattooed on my left shoulder. probably like this:
other voices,
other rooms
not sure about caps vs. no caps yet. i have a few concerns though, mainly that the text will fade too much to be legible over time. i guess the artist can let me know a good size to keep that from happening. i know i don't want it too big though.
any thoughts? anyone else happen to have a capote tattoo? (by the way, if you've never read capote or have only read "in cold blood," i urge you to give his other works a try. he has some amazing fiction and great creative nonfiction essays.) |

Hello all!
New and shiny here, and looking for a bit of input. Planning out a tattoo from Blake's 'The Tyger' and trying to figure out good placement. My left shoulder is currently reserved for a rather small tat, but that's the only place out of the picture. (And even that could be rearranged, since I haven't got it yet!)
It will probably be the first stanza along with the illustration of the tiger Blake did to accompany it.

A friend of mine pointed me in this direction, so I thought I'd share my 'literary tattoo' with you guys:

It's the first two lines from John Gillespie Magee, Jr's poem High Flight. My (late) dad read this to me when I was 4, and it's held a lot of significance since then. Those two lines speak of transcendence, so it fits how I feel as a musician quite well. My strapless black dress framed it perfectly for my graduate recital last month, too. *g*

I've always been a literary nerd, and it's only right that I get some literary tattoos. For my first I think I want a bit of The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock by Eliot. That poem just stuck with me the first time I read it and I adore it. My favorite bit is:

Now then. I can't decide if I should try to get the whole section somewhere, or just "Do I dare disturb the universe?"

I've decided that, finally, during my Winter Break, I am going to get a tattoo that has been in the planning for quite a while now. The quote I want is, "I found god in myself, & I loved her. I loved her fiercely," by Ntozake Shange.
Now, I've already been through quite a bit of internal debate as to where I'd like to get the tattoo. I'm debating between getting the quote either on my ribs, or between my shoulder blades. Regardless, the quote would be broken into three lines, like this:
"I found god in myself,
& I loved her.
I loved her fiercely."
The reason I am having such a hard time deciding is because I love both places! On my ribs, it'd be more accessible to my own sight, and I really love the way rib tattoos look. Between my shoulder-blades would be lovely, too, but I worry as to how practical it is to conceal it. (I am worried about semi-formal/formal functions and dresses, specifically.) As is, I'm leaning towards getting the tattoo on my ribs. What are y'alls opinions on this?

Hello all! I absolutely adore this site and LOVE all of your tattoos!! I was curious if anyone had any examples/had heard of any Phantom of the Opera quotes that were tattooed? This is by far my favorite book (if you have not read it I suggest you do because it is very different from the movie...like most books are :) ) I know I want to get something from the book tattooed because it has had such a large impact on me in so many ways...I am just having trouble finding quotes suitable. Hello there, like many others I'm a long time lurker first time poster!
I will start with a little bit of a background to explain the reasonings as to why I have come up with the tattoo idea that I have. Well, I'll start off by saying that I have never been very...booky. I enjoy reading but never read anything that I felt 'impacted' my life. That was until I came to University and met my best friend, who is the biggest literature whore I've ever know :) His love of literature inspired me, and I asked him to suggest some books and poetry for me to read. He suggested some beautiful poems which are now basically printed on my brain! But he also told me to read 'The picture of Dorian Gray'
The whole book was beautiful! I enjoyed every word, and quite a few quotes jumped out at me and I remember thinking, wow, that's so wonderful. And now I am thinking about getting a quote tattooed on me to remember the first book that ever truly impacted me!
The quote I think I have chosen is 'Live! Live the wonderful life that is in you' but I was thinking about just having 'Live!' but I'm not 100% sure that it has the same impact when its just the one word.
I was contemplating typewriter font and if I only got one word to have it on my foot or on my ribcage (but horizontal)
